Business Days Calculator

Use this business days calculator to count the working days between two dates, or to find the date that falls a set number of business days before or after a start date. It skips Saturdays, Sundays and the 11 U.S. federal holidays, using the observed date when a holiday lands on a weekend. Every holiday it skipped is listed below the result.

Advanced options

How to use the calculator

  1. Pick a mode: Days between dates or Add or subtract business days.
  2. Enter the start date, then either the end date or the number of business days. Use a negative number to count backward, for example to find a date 10 business days before a deadline.
  3. Keep Skip federal holidays checked unless you want weekdays only.
  4. Under the advanced options you can switch to a Monday–Saturday workweek, or count the start date itself.

In between mode you get the number of business days and the same figure in workweeks; in add mode, the resulting date. Both modes also show calendar days, weekend days and holidays skipped.

How business days are counted

  • Business day = Monday to Friday (or Monday to Saturday if you choose) that is not a federal holiday.
  • Between two dates: counting starts the day after the start date and includes the end date, the way most "within X business days" deadlines work. Tick count the start date to include it.
  • Adding days: the first day counted is the day after the start date; weekends and holidays are passed over until the number is reached.
  • A holiday that falls on a weekend is counted once, as a weekend day.

Federal holidays and observed dates

The holidays are the 11 legal public holidays in 5 U.S.C. § 6103: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday, Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Following the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) schedule, a holiday on a Saturday is observed the Friday before and a holiday on a Sunday the Monday after. In 2026, Independence Day falls on a Saturday, so Friday, July 3 is skipped; in 2027, Juneteenth is observed on Friday, June 18, Independence Day on Monday, July 5, Christmas on Friday, December 24, and New Year's Day 2028 on Friday, December 31. The calculator covers 2025 to 2027.

Examples

1. From Columbus Day to year-end

From Monday, Oct 12, 2026 to Thursday, Dec 31, 2026 there are 80 calendar days, 22 weekend days and 3 holidays (Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas), which leaves 55 business days, or 11 workweeks. Without holidays the count would be 58.

2. Five business days over Thanksgiving

An order placed Wednesday, Nov 25, 2026 with "delivery in 5 business days" is due Thursday, Dec 3, 2026: the count skips Thanksgiving and the weekend, so it spans 8 calendar days.

3. Counting back from a deadline

Ten business days before Thursday, Dec 31, 2026 is Wednesday, Dec 16, 2026. Christmas Day is skipped along the way.

4. July 2026

From June 30 to July 31, 2026 there are 22 business days; the only holiday is the observed Independence Day on Friday, July 3.

What the result does not cover

Federal holidays bind federal offices; private employers, schools and states set their own calendars. The calculator does not skip state holidays, the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve or company shutdowns. Banks follow the Federal Reserve schedule, which differs on one point: when a holiday falls on a Saturday, Reserve Banks stay open the Friday before. Court, agency and contract deadlines can have their own counting rules, so check the rule that sets your deadline.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a business day?

Usually Monday through Friday, excluding public holidays. This calculator uses the 11 federal holidays with their observed dates. If your business also works Saturdays, switch the workweek to Monday–Saturday in the advanced options.

How many business days are there in 2026?

250. The year has 365 days, 104 of them Saturdays or Sundays, and all 11 federal holidays fall on a weekday or are observed on one.

Does the calculator include the start date?

Not by default. From Monday to Friday of the same week it counts 4 business days, as most deadlines do. Tick count the start date to get 5.

What happens when a holiday falls on a weekend?

For federal employees it moves: Saturday holidays are observed on the Friday before, Sunday holidays on the Monday after. The calculator already uses those observed dates, so in 2026 it skips Friday, July 3 instead of Saturday, July 4.

Is the day after Thanksgiving a business day?

It is not a federal holiday, so the calculator counts it as a business day. Many employers give the day off, but that is a company decision.

How do I find a date 3 business days from today?

Choose Add or subtract business days, leave today as the start date and enter 3. The calculator counts from tomorrow, skips weekends and holidays, and shows the resulting date.
