Time Calculator

Type a list of times, such as 2:45, 1:30 and -0:20, and this time calculator adds them up in hours and minutes. You also get decimal hours, total minutes and a day count for long totals. Add a start time to see when you will finish, or an hourly rate to turn a week of shifts into gross pay.

How to use the time calculator

  1. Enter your times, one per line or separated by commas. Put a minus sign in front of any time you want to subtract, like -0:30 for a break.
  2. Use any of these formats: 2:30 (hours:minutes), 1:05:30 (hours:minutes:seconds), 1h 20m, 45 min, 90s, or a plain number of hours like 7.5.
  3. Optionally add a start time to get the clock time at the end, shown on a 24-hour clock. A day counter appears if the result lands on another day.
  4. Under advanced options, enter an hourly rate to see gross earnings.

Note that 3:45 always means 3 hours 45 minutes. For a song or a lap of 3 minutes 45 seconds, type 0:03:45 or 3m 45s.

How the calculator adds time

Every entry is converted to seconds, with negative entries counted as negative. The calculator adds them and converts the total back:

  • Total in hours and minutes, with seconds when there are any. A negative total means you subtracted more than you added.
  • Decimal hours = total seconds ÷ 3,600, rounded to two decimals. 45 minutes is 0.75, 20 minutes is 0.33.
  • Total minutes, rounded to the nearest minute, and the number of entries.
  • For totals of 24 hours or more, the same time as days plus hours and minutes. These are 24-hour days, not workdays.
  • End time = start time + total, wrapping past midnight. The day counter shows +1 for the next day or −1 for the day before.
  • Earnings = decimal hours × hourly rate, before taxes and without overtime premiums.

Clock times ignore daylight saving time. Under the U.S. rule described by NIST, clocks change at 2:00 a.m. on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November, so an end time on those nights can be off by an hour.

Examples

Add and subtract

2:45, 1:30, -0:20 gives 3 h 55 min: 3.92 decimal hours or 235 minutes.

A week of shifts

Monday to Friday you worked 8:15, 7:45, 8:30, 6:50 and 8:00. The total is 39 h 20 min, or 39.33 hours and 2,360 minutes. Because it is over 24 hours, the calculator also shows 1 day and 15 h 20 min. At $18.50 an hour, gross earnings come to $727.67.

When will I arrive?

You leave at 9:40 with 2:35 of driving, a 0:45 stop and another 1:50 on the road. Total travel time is 5 h 10 min and the end time is 14:50, or 2:50 PM. Starting at 22:30 with 3:45 to go, you would arrive at 02:15 the next day.

Total a playlist

Tracks of 0:03:45, 0:04:12, 0:05:08 and 0:02:59 add up to 0 h 16 min 04 s.

Using totals for timesheets and pay

The U.S. Department of Labor lets employers use any timekeeping method that is complete and accurate, and employers may even ask workers to write down their own times. Records must show hours worked each day and the total for each workweek, which is what the decimal-hours result is for.

If your employer rounds punch times, federal rules allow rounding to the nearest 5 minutes, tenth of an hour or quarter hour, as long as it averages out so you are paid for all the time you actually work (29 CFR 785.48). This calculator never rounds, so small differences from a paycheck can come from rounding. The earnings figure is a gross estimate: it does not include overtime pay, taxes or deductions.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add hours and minutes together?

Enter each time as hours:minutes and the calculator carries the minutes over for you. 2:45 plus 1:30 is 4 h 15 min, because 75 minutes becomes 1 hour 15 minutes.

How do I subtract time?

Put a minus sign before the time to subtract. For example, 2:45, 1:30, -0:20 gives 3 h 55 min. To find the difference between two clock times instead, use the time duration calculator.

How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours. 7:45 becomes 7.75, 8:20 becomes 8.33. The calculator shows decimal hours for every total, ready for a timesheet.

What time will it be in 3 hours and 45 minutes?

Enter 3:45 and your start time. From 22:30 the answer is 02:15, with the day counter showing +1 because it is past midnight.

Why is 3:45 read as hours, not minutes?

Two-part times are always hours:minutes. For minutes and seconds, add a leading zero hour (0:03:45) or use units (3m 45s).

Can I calculate my pay from my hours?

Yes. Open advanced options and enter your hourly rate. 39 h 20 min at $18.50 is $727.67 gross. Overtime premiums, taxes and deductions are not included.
