How to use the days until calculator
- Choose an event. Pick a holiday, or “A date I choose” to enter any date.
- Check the start date. It is today by default; change it to count from another day.
- Read the result. The big number is the days left. Below it you get the date itself, weeks and days, years, months and days, weekdays, weekend days and hours.
If the date you choose is already past, the calculator counts the days since it instead.
How the countdown works
Days = target date − start date, counting calendar days. The target day itself is the end point, so from Monday to Tuesday is 1 day. Time of day and time zones are not used.
Holiday dates
- Fixed dates: New Year's Day (Jan 1), Valentine's Day (Feb 14), Juneteenth (Jun 19), Independence Day (Jul 4), Halloween (Oct 31), Veterans Day (Nov 11) and Christmas (Dec 25).
- Federal holidays set by rule in 5 U.S.C. 6103: MLK Day is the third Monday in January, Memorial Day the last Monday in May, Labor Day the first Monday in September, and Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday in November.
- Mother's Day is the second Sunday in May and Father's Day the third Sunday in June, as set out in federal law.
- Easter is Western Easter Sunday on the Gregorian calendar.
A holiday always means its next occurrence on or after the start date. On the day itself you see 0 and “That's today”; the next day, the count jumps to next year's date.
The calculator uses the actual date, not the “observed” day off. July 4, 2026 was a Saturday, so the Office of Personnel Management listed Friday, July 3 as the federal holiday. A holiday on a Sunday is observed the following Monday.
Weekdays count Monday to Friday from the start date (counted) up to the target date (not counted). Holidays are not taken out, so use our business days calculator for working days. Hours are days × 24, without daylight saving time changes.
Examples
All counted from Monday, October 12, 2026.
1. How many days until Christmas?
Christmas 2026 is a Friday, 74 days away: 10 weeks and 4 days, or 2 months and 13 days. That includes 54 weekdays and 20 weekend days, or 1,776 hours.

Frequently asked questions
Does the count include today?
No, it counts days from today to the target date, so tomorrow is 1 day away. If you want to include both today and the target day, add 1.
Why does the July 4 countdown differ from my day off?
The calculator counts to July 4 itself. When July 4 falls on a weekend, federal employees get the observed day instead: Friday for a Saturday, Monday for a Sunday. Independence Day 2027 is a Sunday.
Are Halloween, Valentine's Day and Easter federal holidays?
No. They are not on the list of legal public holidays in 5 U.S.C. 6103, and neither are Mother's Day and Father's Day, which fall on Sundays. Halloween, Valentine's Day and Easter are included here because people count down to them, not because they are days off. Washington's Birthday and Columbus Day are federal holidays but aren't among the presets; use a custom date for them.
How are months counted?
By anniversaries: from October 12, the date one month later is November 12. If the start is on the 31st and a month is shorter, the last day of that month is used.
Can I count down to a time, like midnight on New Year's Eve?
Not here: the calculator counts whole calendar days only. The hours figure is simply days × 24, so it doesn't reflect the current time of day or time zones.
